Haiti Update

Thankfully,

  • Our programs in the Leogane area are all doing well.

  • Our schools are open and the students are enthusiastically learning in a safe environment.

  • Gifts to provide solar capabilities has allowed our clinic and headquarters to remain fully functional depite fuel shortages.

  • We are fully able to wire funds, as usual, to the branch office of Sogebank in Cassange.

  • Donors are helping with additional funds to cover significant cost increases for food and fuel, due to the unrest. Thank you! This is an ongoing need,

Unfortunately,

  • The violence and lack of safety since the first week of February are intense in the Port-Au-Prince area

  • Some Haiti empowered staff live closer to Port-au-Prince and often get caught in gang cross fire.

  • Most flights have been suspended, with only occasional supply flights operating. We haven’t been able to pick up items in Port-Au-Prince for a month .

  • A Haitian appointed team (“council of 7”) is working on a short and longer term leader selection. The members have changed due to politics but hopefully will be able to come together to select a new leader.

  • As food has become a critical resource, gangs have started moving into farm land.
