How the Gang Crisis Has Changed Everything
Haiti’s gang crisis is reshaping daily life. It directly impacts how Haiti Empowered delivers hope, stays connected with children, and grows the mission you’re a part of.
Rising Costs and Supply Challenges
Haiti is in economic disarray. Fuel and food costs have soared with the disruption of supply chains in and out of the country. Checkpoints set up by armed gang members along major roads force people to pay for safe passage, adding to expenses and heightening safety concerns. With Port-au-Prince, the nation’s capital and hub for commerce, governance, and transit—largely inaccessible, the ripple effects touch nearly every part of life in Haiti.
Rising Needs in Uncertain Times
Beyond logistics, the crisis has created widespread fear, insecurity, and food shortages. Around 1.4 million people have fled Port-au-Prince.
Finding Hope in Léogâne
In the face of so much uncertainty, there is hope. Families are finding safety and stability in Léogâne where Haiti Empowered continues to serve faithfully. Children are still learning, receiving meals, and being encouraged to dream of a brighter future. Our clinic continues to meet urgent health needs, and our trade school is equipping young men and women with skills to support themselves and their families. We have not given up and God’s not done with us yet!
Impact on Haiti Empowered’s Work
In the past, Haiti Empowered was able to send multiple mission teams each year. These trips brought U.S. and Haiti staff together for in-person collaboration and team building. Teams brought in much-needed supplies directly insuring their safe arrival and cutting down on shipment costs: reusable hygiene kits, soccer balls, medications, computers, equipment, and more.
Most importantly, donors were able to meet the children they sponsored face-to-face. These personal encounters often sparked stories shared with friends and family back home expanding the circle of partners fueling this mission. This was essentially “free advertising” and the news of what was happening in Haiti, spread by trusted friends was an invaluable tool that benefited the organization and the kids.
This is why your partnership matters now more than ever. The challenges are greater, but so is the opportunity to bring light into the darkness. By standing with us, you are making sure that the children and families of Haiti know they are not forgotten—and that a brighter tomorrow is still possible.
